For almost 70 years, the Danskammer Generating Station has been part of New York’s energy landscape powering our homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. Now, Danskammer Energy, LLC, plans to retire equipment and repower the facility with state-of-the-art technology. This will significantly reduce the facility’s environmental footprint and support the state’s renewable energy goals.
A Bridge to Renewables
A modernized Danskammer is designed in anticipation of New York’s energy goals and will serve as a bridge to New York’s renewable energy future.
Quick-Start Technology
Today, the plant takes 11 hours to ramp up before producing any power. A modernized facility will come online in less than an hour. When there is no sun or wind, a modernized Danskammer can come online quickly to provide reliable energy to the Hudson Valley.
Transition to Hydrogen Power
A modernized Danskammer can transition to zero-emission hydrogen power when the technology is available to transport and store hydrogen.
A Reliable Energy Source
As New York moves toward renewables, it will need more quick-start plants like a modernized Danskammer to fill in the gaps in wind and solar production (Source: A Grid in Transition).

Economic Impact
The Danskammer modernization project is a $500 million private investment in our community and our local workforce.
$50 Million
for local government and schools
A modernized Danskammer will contribute more than $50 million in tax payments to local governments and schools during the next 15-20 years.
450
local union construction jobs
We are proud to partner with the Hudson Valley Building and Construction Trades Council and will use local labor during construction.
$12 Million
in annual local spending
We will continue to support local businesses and suppliers through local spending.
Environmental Impact
A modernized Danskammer will be better for the environment offsetting older, dirtier facilities and out-of-state coal plants.
- The result: a reduction of regional emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
- An independent study found that a modernized Danskammer will: Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 333,000 tons annually. This is equivalent to taking 70,000 cars off the road in Orange County or removing 56,000 homes from the grid.
Ratepayer Savings
A modernized Danskammer will lower the cost of your electric bills. The estimated cost savings for New York ratepayers is more than $50 million annually.
New York Energy Zone | Estimated Ratepayer Savings |
---|---|
Hudson Valley | $11,128,325 |
New York City | $23,406,317 |
New York State | $53,009,079 |
